What is Decramastic Roofing
Decramastic roofs are lightweight, stone-coated metal tiles commonly installed in New Zealand from the 1960s to the 1980s.
Over time, these roofs can suffer from chip loss, rust, moss growth, and general surface wear. While some older tiles may contain asbestos in the coating, most restoration work focuses on repairing and recoating the roof surface.
Common issues include:
✔ Loss of stone chip exposing the metal surface
✔ Rust development over time
✔ Moss and lichen growth
✔ Faded and deteriorated coatings
✔ Physical damage or denting of tiles
✔ Asbestos may be present in older tile coatings or adhesive layers
Why Restore Instead of Replace?
Restoring a Decramastic roof is often a practical alternative to full roof replacement when the underlying structure remains sound.
A properly prepared and coated roof can continue to perform well for many years, while avoiding the cost and disruption associated with removing and replacing the roof.
Key Advantages of Restoration
✔ Cost-effective
Significantly lower cost compared with full roof replacement.
✔ Less Disruption
No need to remove the existing roof or expose the building.
✔ Extends Roof Life
Restoration systems help prolong the serviceable life of the roof.
✔ Lower Environmental Impact
Reduces Waste and avoids the environmental impact of removing, transporting and disposing of existing roofing materials.
✔ Improves Appearance
Re-chipping and Re-coating will restore the look of the roof
How the ReGuard System Works
The ReGuard roof system is applied as a structured multi-step coating process designed to restore, seal, and protect ageing Decramastic roofing.
Rather than replacing the roof, the system focuses on rebuilding the surface, addressing areas of deterioration, and applying protective coatings to extend the life of the roof.
Each stage of the system performs a specific function, working together to restore performance and improve long-term durability.
Clean, Prepare and Re-chip
✔ Clean & Treat the Roof
The roof is cleaned using Contractor Wash, applied and worked into the surface with a broom to break down moss, lichen, and contaminants. Unlike traditional methods, water blasting is avoided to prevent unnecessary damage or disturbance to the roof surface. The roof is then gently rinsed and allowed to dry.
✔ Treat Rust & Prime Bare Metal Roof
All areas of rust are treated using RustCon, and any exposed bare metal is primed with a Zinc Primer to provide corrosion resistance and promote coating adhesion.
✔ Apply Hi-Build Basecoat & Re-Chip
Once the roof is clean and prepared, high-build basecoat is applied to rebuild the surface and bind the existing coating. To ensure even coverage, the coating is applied in manageable sections (approximately 1–2m² at a time), with roofing chip applied into the wet coating to restore the original textured finish.
Protective Roof Coating System
This stage seals the roof surface and provides the primary long-term protection within the system.
Once the basecoat has fully cured, a high-performance 100% acrylic roof coating is applied to seal and protect the surface.
The coating is applied in a two-coats to achieve full coverage, consistent film build, and long-term durability.
Typical coverage is approximately 10–12m² per litre per coat, depending on roof profile and porosity.
✔ Application & Finish
Applied by airless spray, roller, or brush depending on access and roof condition
A matt finish is used to provide a consistent, low-glare appearance across the roof surface
Darker colours are commonly selected, as they help reduce the visible build-up of dirt within the textured surface of Decramastic tiles
✔ Performance & Environmental Benefits
Forms a durable, breathable coating system that resists weather and UV exposure
Low VOC, water-based formulation for safer application and easy clean-up
Suitable for roofs used for rainwater collection when used as part of a complete coating system
Maintains flexibility to accommodate normal roof movement
High UV resistance, formulated for New Zealand conditions, helping minimise colour fade, reduce surface chalking, and maintain coating performance over time.
Extended Roof Life & Performance
The completed ReGuard system forms a continuous, sealed coating across the roof surface, improving durability and overall performance.
By rebuilding and protecting the surface, the system helps extend the serviceable life of the roof while maintaining its function and appearance.
The restored coating system helps reduce ongoing deterioration caused by weather, UV exposure, and environmental wear.
This provides a practical alternative to roof replacement, avoiding unnecessary cost and disruption.
✔ Ongoing Performance
Maintains a consistent, low-glare finish across the roof
Helps reduce ongoing deterioration from environmental exposure
Periodic cleaning is recommended to remove contaminants such as dirt, moss, and lichen
Regular maintenance helps preserve the appearance and extend the life of the coating system
✔ System Outcome
A restored, protected roof that continues to perform — providing a practical alternative to roof replacement, avoiding the significant cost, disruption, and environmental impact of removing and disposing of existing roofing materials.
